Updated on: September 30, 2024

Are you annoyed when YouTube automatically plays videos in your language, on mobile devices? You're not the one facing this issue! It can be inconvenient when videos that offer multiple audio language options default to your language without a way to switch to your preferred one on the mobile app. The workaround of switching to a desktop PC is quite cumbersome for users out there. In this article, I will discuss the reasons behind this issue. Share solutions, for changing the audio language without relying on a desktop PC.

What's the issue? :

The mobile app, from YouTube aims to offer a great user experience but in the recent update, it does not allow users to switch between audio tracks in videos that have multiple language options. This restriction poses a challenge, for users like me to change audio languages during playback.

In my case, most videos of English-speaking YouTube creators automatically get played in my native language HINDI instead of ENGLISH. When I use the mobile app YouTube automatically selects my language based on my location & account settings. This is a really great feature and use of AI technology to offer quality content irrespective of language barrier. But sometimes we prefer to listen original version due to the humor and personal touch.

Unfortunately, it's not easy to switch the language within the video player interface, on mobile devices as the audio language switching option is missing.

How to Switch the Language of Audio on Your Mobile Device Using Desktop Mode

Currently, the YouTube mobile app doesn't have an option to switch the language directly. But I found a workaround by using the mobile browser version of YouTube with a small tweak, in the settings to achieve this adjustment.

Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Launch the web browser on your smartphone. Open up Chrome or your favorite web browser on your Android/iOS device.

Step 2: Open www.youtube.com. Make sure you enable the 'desktop mode' while navigating the website.

Step 4: Click on the gear icon labeled 'Setting' located in the video player. Please choose either the "Audio Track" which provide you list of available audio tracks for that specific video.

Step 5: Choose the language you prefer to use. Select your language, for the audio, from the list of choices provided.

Note: This strategy is effective when the mobile website interface has the audio language feature included.YouTube is progressively introducing features; therefore availability might differ.

Another Approach to Consider. Modifying Language Preferences

If the method mentioned earlier doesn't work for you on YouTube app settings adjustments. Then simply follow below mentioned steps .

1: Launch the YouTube application. Click on the profile image located in the corner.

2. Navigate, to your device's Settings menu. Please choose "Settings" from the options, in the drop-down menu.

3. Navigate to Settings  Tap, on the option labeled as "General."

4. When you choose a  Location pick a country that matches your desired language.

5. Go back. Select Language if it's there to choose your language.

Please Note: Modifying these settings could impact the content recommendations and popular videos shown within the app.

Why Audio Track Language Switching feature is not made accessible for YouTube Mobile?

YouTube keeps improving its platform to make it better, for users. The reason why there no language switch for audio, on the app could be because of:

1. Technical constraints come into play when introducing the functionality of switching audio tracks as it necessitates assistance.

2. Local Preferences: Choosing languages, by default meets the needs of users in the area.

3. Possibility of training their AI  system to understand which language users & their behaviors helping them get more business insights. This will help them focus on building a geographically identical system.

Currently, It's a bit of a hassle that the YouTube app, on mobile, doesn't let you easily change languages now. However, you can try using the mobile browser version without desktop mode or tweaking app settings as my above solutions. Let's hope upcoming updates will address this feature.
